Every successful seller has had a product that "just sold". Customers kept asking for it, it sold out fast, and every sale made good money. That's what people call a winning product.

The good news: finding one isn't luck. It's a method. Here's how Gambian sellers can find theirs, without gambling their savings.

1. What a winning product really is

A winning product is not just something popular. It's something that ticks most of these boxes:

  • People want it, and you can see the demand
  • It leaves a healthy profit after all your costs
  • It's easy to deliver without damage
  • Customers come back for more
  • You have an edge over other sellers

You rarely find a product that is perfect on all five. But the more boxes it ticks, the safer your money is.

2. Start with real demand, not your opinion

The most expensive mistake is selling something because you like it. Look for proof that other people want it:

  • Listen: What do friends, family, and customers keep asking for that's hard to find?
  • Watch WhatsApp Status and groups: Which products do sellers post again and again? Repeat posting usually means repeat sales.
  • Ask the diaspora question: What do people ask relatives abroad to send home? That's demand that isn't being met locally.
  • Check social media: Look at TikTok and Facebook. Which products get lots of comments asking "how much?"
  • Walk the market: What sells out fast? What do sellers say customers ask for that they don't have?

3. Check your margin before anything else

A product can sell well and still lose you money. Before you buy stock, add up your real cost per item: the supplier price, transport, delivery, packaging, and TalaBuy commission.

A simple rule: aim to sell for at least 40% more than your total cost. Less than that, and one returned item or one delivery problem can wipe out your profit.

4. Think about delivery from day one

Online, every product has to travel. The easiest products to sell are:

  • Small and light: cheaper and easier to deliver
  • Hard to break: fewer damaged orders and refunds
  • Long-lasting: they won't spoil in the heat or expire on your shelf
  • Simple to understand: customers know what they're getting from photos

Large, fragile, or perishable products can still work, but they need more experience. Start easy.

5. Look for repeat buyers

The best products don't sell once. They sell again and again to the same customer. That means you pay to win a customer once, and earn from them for months.

Categories with strong repeat buying:

  • 💄 Beauty, skin care, and hair products
  • 👶 Baby and children's essentials
  • 📱 Phone accessories like chargers, cables, and cases
  • 🧼 Household and personal care items
  • 👗 Fashion items people buy in different colours or styles

6. Find your angle

If ten sellers offer the same product at the same price, the only way to win is to be cheaper, and that's a race nobody wins. Instead, give customers a reason to choose you:

  • Better quality than what's usually available
  • A bundle: phone case + screen protector + charger, for example
  • Better photos and clearer descriptions than other sellers
  • Faster, more reliable delivery and friendly service
  • A style or variety others don't offer

7. Test before you commit

Even with all this research, the market has the final word. So test before you buy big:

  • Pick 3 to 5 products that score well.
  • Buy a small quantity of each.
  • List them with great photos and honest descriptions.
  • Track results for 2 to 3 weeks: views, questions, and orders.
  • Restock the winners. Drop the rest. No emotions.

Red flags to watch out for

Tap each one to see why it matters.

🚩 "Everyone is selling it right now"
By the time everyone sells it, prices drop and profit disappears. Only enter if you have a clear angle.
🚩 You can't explain who would buy it
If you can't picture your customer, you won't know how to reach them.
🚩 The profit is less than 40% after all costs
There's no room for mistakes, discounts, or returns. Look for a better supplier or a different product.
🚩 It breaks, spoils, or expires easily
Damaged and expired stock is pure loss. Start with durable products.
🚩 You're buying it because a supplier pushed it
Suppliers want to sell their stock. Trust customer demand, not sales talk.
